About Minna

With a lifelong passion for the visual arts, I come from a family deeply rooted in creative and hands-on professions. My father was a cabinet maker and my mother a chef, instilling in me the value of craftsmanship and practical skills. Artistic inspiration runs through my family: my great aunt was a painter, my cousin a ceramic artist, and my grandparents contributed to the theater through set design and performance. I pursued my interests by attending OCAD, followed by specialized training in make-up and hairstyling.

My career began in a costume shop selling special effects makeup, eventually leading me to work on film sets where I applied my skills in makeup and hairstyling.  I enjoyed working on set but decided to focus on building a clientele within the salon.

While I enjoyed the creative energy of set work, I eventually shifted my focus to building a clientele within the salon environment. Over the years, I worked independently, collaborated on photoshoots, weddings, and performance events, and later co-owned a salon, gaining valuable experience in salon management. When I closed my business and joined a new salon, I was excited by the collaborative atmosphere but realized I wanted something more. Inspired by my children, I began volunteering with their various activities, which sparked my interest in teaching and sharing my expertise with others.

Now as I am immersed in my practicum placement, I know that I have found the right path for myself.  The challenge of deconstructing hairdressing concepts and processes for students new to the field is very energizing.  Each small learning moment that I observe is inspiring, and I feel so honoured when the students ask me for assistance.
