Teaching Philosophy

Each student deserves to learn in an environment where they feel safe and supported on their individual journey.  Through scaffolded instruction, patience and creativity, it is possible to teach students of varied abilities. By incorporating UDL into daily lesson plans, individual learning styles will be celebrated, allowing students to grow their confidence while engaging with new materials.  Through this process, both student and educator will learn and grow.

Allowing students to explore their interests in a guided manner inspires an intrinsic motivation to be curious and seek out new information and to actively participate in creating their own learning experience.

I am excited to learn alongside my students, to grow in mindfulness and compassion, and to remember that there are always new solutions to be discovered.

First Semester - October to January

TXJ20 - 1st Period

Hairstyling & Aesthetics

During my time with this grade 10 class, we had the opportunity to explore both basic beauty make-up, as well as SPFX make-up such as scars and bruises.

Students learned the proper techniques to shampoo, then blow-dry mannequin heads using round brushes to create both curved under and flipped-out ends.

Thermal styling techniques such as barrel curls, curling iron waves, and flatiron curls were created, while maintaining safety procedures while using hat tools.

Following this, students practiced French, Dutch and Cornrow braids.  To complete the styling techniques unit, students researched and designed updo styles combining braids and thermal styling techniques.

TXJ20 - 3rd Period

Hairstyling & Aesthetics

In addition to the previously mentioned techniques, both TXJ20 classes were introduced to haircutting theory.

Students learned proper sectioning, comb and scissor handling, as well as the importance of uniformly wet hair for maintaining hair tension.  Students applied this information to  perform zero elevation haircuts on mannequin heads.

Hair colour theory was introduced next, including natural and desired levels of colour and underlying pigments.  We then examined how to read hair colour codes before moving on to full hair colour applications.

Students performed a single tone hair colour application with permanent hair colour, comparing their presumed results to actual results.  They then learned foiling techniques and placements and practiced by creating a couple of highlights toned with vibrant fashion colours.

Hairstyling & Aesthetics

With previous experience in the Hairstyling and Aesthetics classroom, these grade 11 and 12 students moved from applying health and safety protocols to basic manicures to creating elaborate gel manicures and nail art on acrylic nails.

Students practiced their facial techniques using a Wood's lamp to map out skin health on a face chart, prior to performing basic facials on one another.

They then advanced to facials with exfoliants, masks, extractions, and used the high-frequency facial machine to promote healthy skin while addressing problem-areas.

The semester concluded with a "Glow-Up" make-up challenge where students were encouraged to tap into their creativity while using paints, glue, glitter and lashes to create avant-garde "make-up" effects.

Second Semester - January to March

TAS20

Technology & Skilled Trades

Students in this grade 10 class had the opportunity to visit the many Tech classrooms at the school. We visited the automotive, wood, and machine shops, hospitality kitchen, hairstyling and aesthetics salon, the fashion arts class and family studies kitchen.

To begin the semester students learned about health and safety considerations in these Tech classrooms, before moving to the machine shop where students embarked on an assignment to design and build nail polish stands for the aesthetics spa.

We then ventured into the family studies classroom to explore international cuisine.  Students were set with the task of researching dessert recipes, acquiring ingredients, then creating and plating their desserts in an appetizing manner.

TAS20

Technology & Skilled Trades

Students started the semester with a focus on safety in the Tech classroom environment, conducting a tour of the various classrooms and paying attention to the location of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations and emergency exits.

They were then introduced to the project of designing and building spa tables to house necessary tools and materials required while performing facials.  Students spent time measuring the space between spa beds, and considering all the necessary materials required when performing a facial.

Once designs were complete, students began the construction process and evaluated their results by taking completed tables to the spa and testing them for stability and practicality.

The class then embarked on an international dessert project where they researched recipes and created created desserts to share with the class.

TXJ3E/TXJ4E

Hairstyling & Aesthetics

Grade 11 and 12 students in this class began the semester by creating short videos on health and safety considerations in the salon and spa industries.  Students focused an chemical hazards, disinfecting and sanitizing procedures, and safe use of tools and materials.

Students moved into the salon for the next phase, selecting mannequins to shampoo and practice blow-dry techniques before embarking on roller set techniques.

Thermal styling techniques such as barrel curls, curling iron waves, and flatiron curls were introduced next, before moving on to French and Dutch braids, then cornrow braids.
